A photograph taken on the trail when the William Edward "Buck" Anderson, McQuerry, and Adams families moved from Garrard County, Kentucky to Abilene, Texas about 1888. After about one year they moved 100 miles southwest to Howard County, Texas. (Itan, Coahoma and Big Spring area). My guess is a photographer was traveling up and down the covered wagon trail making a living by photographing the settlers as they traveled southwest from the East Coast. This is the best photo of four similar photos.
Thank You!, Robbie Champion, for sharing this photograph with us! Robbie is a 2G Granddaughter of William Edward "Buck" Anderson and Margaret Ann (Cummins) Anderson. "Buck" was a son of John and Susan (Naylor) Anderson. "Buck's" father John was the son of Archelus and Elizabeth (Parrish) Anderson . "Buck's" mother Susan (Naylor) Anderson was the daughter of Edward B. Naylor of Garrard County, Kentucky. Margaret Ann (Cummins) Anderson was the daughter of Flem Cummins of Lincoln County, Kentucky.
"Buck" left Kentucky at age 59, taking all of his family including his married children and their families to Texas. "Buck" died about 2 years after coming to Texas and was the first person buried in the Itan Cemetery. His grave, high on a hill, is next to the road in the corner of a section of land they had homesteaded.
The family lived in a dugout for a short while until they could build a house. Recovered family documents use the spelling "Itan" while the now official name of the area is "Iatan".
