In 1888/89 William Edward "Buck" Anderson brought his family from Garrard County, Kentucky to Texas. They came first to Abilene for about one year then to Iatan located on the Mitchell and Howard County line. Buck and his family are considered early settlers of Howard County Texas. "Jim" (James Samuel), "Buck" Anderson's son had married Lucy Rigsby in Garrard County Kentucky in 1880.

Family Lore is James ("Jim") came to Abilene Texas for the family to see what it was like. He then returned to Kentucky and with his family and all his living brothers and sisters followed his father William Edward to Texas.

In Garrard County Kentucky they lived near Preachersville located in Lincoln County a few miles from the Garrard and Lincoln County line. I ask Goebelene Singleton Where Preachersville had gotten its name.
She answered the following:
"So glad to hear from you. I think that Preachersville was named long before it had a Post Office. I found the name in a deed about 1858. There were several preachers who lived in the neighborhood. The residents had to go to Crab Orchard to receive their mail. I guess that the Post Master in Crab Orchard actually named it Preachersville when he gave the mail to whomever was picking the mail up. He mentioned that they wanted the mail for all the preachers. Uncle Billy Cummins was the first Post Master in Preachersville. It has been years since it had a Post Office. When I was growing up, we had two mail boxes. Most of our mail came from Stanford, but we were also on the Crab Orchard route and occasionally got mail in that box."

Many of the Preachersville area families were descendants of the Baptist who were prosecuted in Virginia. Jim's second great grandfather Feathergail Adams was a Baptist Preacher and a member of the "Traveling Church" in Virginia in the late 1700's. Since these preachers were prosecuted they traveled from town to town and couldn't have a scheduled meeting place. About 1800 Fathergail Adams founded a church in Garrard County Kentucky which many still believe exists today. "Jim" Anderson is a descendant of Feathergail Adams through his mother Margaret Ann (Cummins) Anderson. Feathergail suffered a heart attack while preaching a Sunday sermon and died later that day at the age of 52 in 1807.

Jim's father Buck died in 1891, about a year after settling his family at Iatan.
